Hostels can often be a great alternative to pricier hotels without requiring too many compromises.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Let\u2019s dive in!<\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n<h2 style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>The Basics<\/strong><\/h2>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What is a hostel?<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A hostel is an affordable and safe place to stay, no matter where you are in the world.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What makes hostels unique are the dormitory-style rooms (often with bunk beds), shared bathrooms, and, most importantly, their low prices.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most spaces are shared\u2014except your bed!\u2014which makes hostels very social environments where meeting new people is part of the experience.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Note: Many hostels now offer private rooms suitable for couples, families, and groups of friends.<\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n<h3 style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>Types of Hostels<\/strong><\/h3>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Party hostels:<\/strong> As the name suggests, these hostels focus on nightlife, often featuring bars, drinking games, and other social activities. They can be noisy, and guests might be less considerate of quiet hours. If you&#8217;re looking for an energetic atmosphere, this could be for you!<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Budget hostels:<\/strong> These are my personal favorites. Often run by locals and not part of large chains, they offer the essentials without extras. You\u2019ll typically find a quieter, more relaxed vibe here.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Boutique hostels:<\/strong> This is a growing trend. These upscale hostels resemble hotels, offering top-notch amenities like gourmet breakfasts, cinema rooms, and more. The downside? They\u2019re pricier than regular hostels.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Working hostels:<\/strong> Common in countries like Australia and New Zealand, these hostels cater to people who are staying for extended periods while job hunting. Others, usually party hostels, may have a maximum age limit of 30-35 to maintain a youthful, lively atmosphere.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, most hostels don\u2019t have age restrictions. If you\u2019re unsure, check the hostel&#8217;s description or contact them directly.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>Can families stay in hostels?<\/strong><\/p>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although hostels were originally designed for young travelers, they are usually open to everyone. I\u2019ve met entire families, kids included, staying in hostels!<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I wouldn\u2019t recommend dorms for families, but a private room can be a great option, especially if traveling with young children.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>How much does a hostel cost?<\/strong><\/p>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Prices vary depending on where you are. In some countries in Southeast Asia and South America, you can find hostels for as little as \u20ac2-3 per night. In cities like London, prices are more likely to be around \u20ac20-30 per night.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Prices are just a general guideline and can depend on factors like season, location, and hostel type. Websites like Hostelworld, Booking.com, and Agoda are great resources for checking prices.<\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n<h2 style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>Services<\/strong><\/h2>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>What do hostels provide?<\/strong><\/p>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This depends on the hostel, but you can generally expect a bed, a bathroom, and linens (so no need to bring a sleeping bag or sheets). Some private rooms, however, come with their own bathroom.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most hostels maintain high cleanliness standards, with bathrooms cleaned multiple times a day. Still, it\u2019s always a good idea to bring shower flip-flops.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Note: Some bathrooms may be mixed-gender, but this varies by hostel.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>What does &#8220;mixed dorm&#8221; mean?<\/strong><\/p>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In mixed dorms, both males and females share the same room. While waiting, you\u2019re typically allowed to use the common areas.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>Hostel Rules<\/strong><\/p>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hostels often have some rules\u2014like quiet hours or prohibiting outside alcohol if there\u2019s a bar on-site. These rules are usually explained at check-in or listed in the hostel\u2019s information online.<\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n<h2 style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>What to bring to a hostel<\/strong><\/h2>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you&#8217;re a light sleeper, bring earplugs and an eye mask. For security, pack a padlock for the lockers.
