Thank you!<\/em><\/p>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">When it comes to packing your backpack for a trip, the two key aspects to keep in mind are: lightness and versatility.<\/p>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Unless you have special needs, don\u2019t go over 15kg, ideally 10kg. That way you\u2019ll avoid unnecessary aches, airline surcharges and the temptation to take a taxi instead of walking.<\/p>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Leaving for a week or a year makes no difference: clothes can be washed. Finally, remember that this is meant to be a complete list that lets you <a href=\"https:\/\/ilbackpacker.it\/en\/start-here\/planning\/backpacking-light\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">travel light<\/a> while being suitable for almost any kind of destination\/climate. So it\u2019s up to you to use common sense and avoid bringing hiking boots or heavy clothes if you want to spend a month of sun and sea in Thailand.<\/p>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Below you\u2019ll find some videos (in Italian, but you can turn on the subtitles) where I show what I took with me on various trips:<\/p>\r\n\r\n<ul>\r\n \t<li style=\"text-align: left;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/gyXglYCl5OY\">My ideal travel backpack, used on my last two trips to Asia.<\/a><\/li>\r\n \t<li style=\"text-align: left;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=DLnTI93i8c0\">My two backpacks for a 6-month trip through India and Nepal.<\/a><\/li>\r\n \t<li style=\"text-align: left;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/awioCpyWPn4\">A minimal setup with a single 28L backpack, used for a 6-week trip to Morocco.<\/a><\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">What follows is a general list; if you want to see exactly what I carry, you\u2019ll find the detailed, constantly updated list on <a href=\"https:\/\/lighterpack.com\/r\/nuoy70\">this page<\/a>. When I\u2019m on the move, I always put the compressible backpack inside the bigger one. That\u2019s about 14 kg in total, but I\u2019ve always managed to get it through as carry-on. Given its compact size, the backpack doesn\u2019t draw attention. Nobody has ever asked me to weigh it. That said, the camera bag plus tripod weigh 4.5 kg, while the laptop, mouse and two hard drives weigh another 1.8 kg. Basically, without all the extra gear that most travelers don\u2019t need, the weight is about 7.7 kg.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<h2 style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>Backpacks and various bags<\/strong><\/h2>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Before starting with the actual list, let\u2019s talk about the most suitable \u201ccontainers\u201d.<\/p>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Large backpack (40-60 liters): especially if you\u2019re traveling in hot climates, 40 liters is more than enough. The <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/453oazU\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Osprey farpoint 40<\/a> is an excellent backpack designed specifically for traveling, well made and with a handy front opening, and it can also be used as carry-on.<\/p>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Small backpack (10-20 liters): mainly for day trips. When I\u2019m moving from one destination to the next, this is the backpack I never let out of my sight: it holds my documents and electronic devices. I\u2019m a happy owner of a <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3yHRAaG\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">north face borealis<\/a>; other good options are the <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/4e6sa6D\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Osprey daylite<\/a> and, if you\u2019re after lightness and portability at the expense of pockets and comfort, the <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3V4hEnN\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Sea to Summit Ultra-Sil<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3CzMUBA\">Osprey Ultralight<\/a> are two excellent options. If you put dirty clothes in a plastic bag they\u2019ll smell even worse. Also useful for shoes.<\/p>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3yE4SVr\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Toiletry bag\/medicine bag<\/a>: one is as good as another, but if you need to buy a new one, get one you can hang up.<\/p>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3VlPSEH\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Packing cubes<\/a>: to keep your backpack as organized as possible and save space.<\/p>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/4aGOaSL\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Travel case:<\/a> to organize chargers, cables, adapters, SD cards and so on.<\/p>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">If you want something carefully designed, of excellent quality and with a lifetime warranty, take a look at Peak Design\u2019s products: <a href=\"https:\/\/peak-design.pxf.io\/XYy6Lo\">Shoe Pouch<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/peak-design.pxf.io\/AW0ryj\">Tech Pouch<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/peak-design.pxf.io\/1re6DR\">Wash Pouch<\/a> (<a href=\"https:\/\/peak-design.pxf.io\/VmanbA\">small version<\/a>) and <a href=\"https:\/\/peak-design.pxf.io\/Jzb1LR\">packing cubes<\/a> (<a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/VLqw1NOoGHQ?t=456\">review on my YouTube channel<\/a>, in Italian, but you can turn on the subtitles).<\/p>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"img-fluid alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/ilbackpacker.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/word-image-8.jpeg\" alt=\"Packing cubes, a cotton bag and a toiletry bag keep your backpack organized.\" width=\"1432\" height=\"520\" \/><\/p>\r\n\r\n<h2 style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>List of clothes to bring on a trip<\/strong><\/h2>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">In general, if your budget allows it, I recommend merino wool clothing which, thanks to its <a href=\"https:\/\/monkeysandmountains.com\/benefits-of-merino-wool-hiking-outdoor\/\">many properties<\/a>, is particularly well suited to travel.<\/p>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><em>Hot and temperate climates:<\/em><\/p>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/4aHPpB6\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">A pair of convertible pants<\/a>: if you plan to travel only in hot climates, this should be your only pair of long pants. Maybe add a pair of jeans for going out in the evening in climates that aren\u2019t exactly tropical.<\/p>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><em>For women: a pair of leggings. They\u2019re versatile and suit different climates, great as pajamas too, and rolled up they take up little space.<\/em><\/p>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Two pairs of shorts: one pair of sports shorts and one for going out.<\/p>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3DMFf3t\">T-shirts<\/a>: 4-5 T-shirts should be more than enough. If your budget allows it, I recommend merino wool.<\/p>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Tank tops: very useful in hot climates, and if the temperature drops they\u2019re comfortable under a sweatshirt.<\/p>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3KnwWPt\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Thermal top:<\/a> to use as a base layer, it keeps you extremely warm without adding much weight.<\/p>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/4bInqCS\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Technical fleece:<\/a> these keep you extremely warm and are super light. Personally, I prefer one with a hood so I don\u2019t need to bring a beanie.<\/p>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/4bCZ0dW\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Rain jacket<\/a>: it\u2019s worth investing a bit of money in a breathable technical product, otherwise you\u2019ll get the sauna effect.<\/p>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"img-fluid alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/ilbackpacker.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/word-image-9.jpeg\" alt=\"Which clothes to take on a trip?\" width=\"1999\" height=\"875\" \/><\/p>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Hat: personally, I don\u2019t consider it essential. In cold climates a hood easily replaces it, so it\u2019s probably more useful in extremely hot climates to protect yourself from the sun.<\/p>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3X9iGBP\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Socks:<\/a> I recommend merino wool, as you can wear them several times before they start to smell: three short pairs and one long pair.<\/p>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Underwear: 5 pairs of underwear should be more than enough.<\/p>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><em>For women: bras, and I recommend a sports bra, which is much more comfortable to wear, especially when you\u2019re on the move with your backpack.<\/em><\/p>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Swimsuit: just one, please.<\/p>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/2GJ5Mo1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Money belt:<\/a> a great solution, unlike the classic fanny packs everyone knows about.<\/p>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/2EN6zli\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Merino wool neck gaiter:<\/a> I bring this even to climates that aren\u2019t exactly cold. It\u2019s extremely useful and versatile and, being merino wool, it breathes really well. It can be used as a sleep mask, to protect yourself from dust on a scooter and so on. One of my favorite gadgets.<\/p>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><em>N.B. With the clothes listed so far you can travel light practically anywhere, as long as temperatures aren\u2019t too low (thermal top, fleece and rain jacket layered on top of each other are more than enough to keep you warm in many situations); if you\u2019re preparing for a trip to really cold climates, consider the following items and, of course, use common sense, maybe bringing an extra sweatshirt and leaving your shorts at home.<\/em><\/p>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3yKlQBJ\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Heavy jacket:<\/a> the jacket won\u2019t affect the weight of your backpack, since you\u2019ll probably be wearing it all the time.<\/p>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Hat: for lovers of minimalism, the jacket\u2019s hood does the same job.<\/p>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3x8MXWu\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Gloves:<\/a> buy ones that aren\u2019t too bulky and, ideally, water-resistant.<\/p>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Long pants or jeans.<\/p>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"img-fluid alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/ilbackpacker.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/word-image-10.jpeg\" alt=\"Which clothes to take on a trip to cold climates?\" width=\"1170\" height=\"520\" \/><\/p>\r\n\r\n<h2 style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>List of footwear to bring on a trip<\/strong><\/h2>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Flip-flops: always bring them, whatever kind of trip it is (for hygiene in the shower); in tropical climates I wear them practically all day. <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3wVChL0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Havaianas<\/a> seem to be indestructible.<\/p>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/4e5DT5q\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Hiking shoes:<\/a> absolutely recommended if you\u2019re planning more than a few hikes, but for the occasional walk a pair of sneakers with a decent sole should be more than enough, and much more versatile.<\/p>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Sneakers: I always bring them; they\u2019re suitable for pretty much any situation.<\/p>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3V2aqko\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Technical sandals:<\/a> even though I\u2019ve never used them personally, I see them as a great alternative to a pair of shoes, especially in tropical climates.<\/p>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"img-fluid alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/ilbackpacker.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/word-image-11.jpeg\" alt=\"Which footwear to take on a trip?\" width=\"1449\" height=\"299\" \/><\/p>\r\n\r\n<h2 style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>List of accessories to bring on a trip<\/strong><\/h2>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3Ra9mJX\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Padlock<\/a>: buy one with a combination, ideally TSA-approved.<\/p>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3wXc3Yo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Sunglasses:<\/a> useful in every situation, from the sea to the mountains. I recommend polarized ones that aren\u2019t too expensive, since they can easily break when traveling.<\/p>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3yACOSU\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Water filter:<\/a> in developing countries, where you\u2019d otherwise have to buy bottled water, it can save you a lot of money.<\/p>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3VjaJsd\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Sewing kit:<\/a> certainly not essential, but on long trips I always bring it, given how little it weighs.<\/p>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/4c1NiJo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Swiss Army knife:<\/a> I don\u2019t bring it anymore because I usually travel carry-on only, and you can\u2019t keep it in your carry-on, but if you check your backpack it can be worth bringing.<\/p>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3VosXsy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Mask and snorkel:<\/a> I strongly recommend them for certain destinations; renting them can be expensive.<\/p>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3oRQD82\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Water bottle<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.it\/integrata-Escursionismo-situazioni-Emergenza-confezioni\/dp\/B00H90PFOK\/ref=sr_1_2?s=sports&amp;ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1519916406&amp;sr=1-2&amp;keywords=borraccia+filtro&amp;tag=nt92-21\">:<\/a> if you don\u2019t go for one with a built-in filter, get one with a wide opening so the inside can be cleaned easily. Recently I started using the <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3sDhi9m\">Katadyn Befree 1L<\/a> (<a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/353fApX\">600ml version<\/a>), as it\u2019s much more compact and easier to carry than the <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3h67DmJ\">LifeStraw<\/a>. The <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3yPGWhT\">LifeStraw Peak Series<\/a> is slightly heavier and sturdier but, above all, it can be used as a normal water bottle if you have access to drinking water for long periods.<\/p>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3X0zP0b\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Earplugs:<\/a> dorms can sometimes be really noisy. Also useful for camping, especially in strong wind. If you sleep on your side, I strongly recommend trying <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3R6g9o1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mack\u2019s<\/a>: they\u2019re made of wax and when you wear them it\u2019s as if you weren\u2019t wearing anything. These are my favorite earplugs.<\/p>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3X32CBe\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Spork:<\/a> I always bring it.<\/p>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Notebook: a small notebook and a pen to jot down travel notes and\/or thoughts.<\/p>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"img-fluid alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/ilbackpacker.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/word-image-12.jpeg\" alt=\"Useful items to take on a trip.\" width=\"1262\" height=\"303\" \/><\/p>\r\n\r\n<h2 style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>List of camping gear to bring on a trip<\/strong><\/h2>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><em>Obviously this is all gear that, because of its weight and volume, you should only bring if you think you\u2019ll really need it.<\/em><\/p>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3Ra4rsp\">Tent<\/a>: even though I like camping, I\u2019d only recommend it for certain trips. Basically, it\u2019s only worth it if you use it regularly. Essential if you\u2019re traveling by hitchhiking.<\/p>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/4c4qvwR\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Hammock:<\/a> a more compact alternative to a tent.<\/p>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Sleeping pad: obviously not essential but highly recommended, especially at low temperatures, to insulate you from the ground.<\/p>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Sleeping bag: buy it based on the climate you\u2019ll be facing.<\/p>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3JhNnda\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Stove<\/a><\/p>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"img-fluid alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/ilbackpacker.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/word-image-13.jpeg\" alt=\"Camping gear for a trip.\" width=\"1295\" height=\"445\" \/><\/p>\r\n\r\n<h2 style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>List of electronic devices to bring on a trip<\/strong><\/h2>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3R7xvAJ\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Universal adapter:<\/a> essential. I recommend one with USB ports so you can charge several devices at the same time, like <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3O0QQlQ\">this model<\/a>.<\/p>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3RaqvmW\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Flashlight:<\/a> get a headlamp with a rechargeable battery and, ideally, water-resistant.<\/p>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Smartphone: it can fully replace a compact camera and should be more than enough to \u201cstay online\u201d without needing a tablet or computer. Remember to bring the \u201cpin\u201d to remove the SIM if you think you\u2019ll need it.<\/p>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Tablet: great for watching a movie or just goofing around, but certainly not essential, since it\u2019s basically a smartphone with a bigger screen.<\/p>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Computer: only bring it if you need it for work, otherwise it\u2019s just dead weight.<\/p>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">USB stick: given how little it weighs, it\u2019s always a good idea to have one.<\/p>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/4aLjb89\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Power bank:<\/a> useful so you never run out of battery;
