It offers backpacker, one-way, multi-trip and already-travelling cover, and it is particularly strong if your trip includes activities that standard travel insurance often excludes.

The standard policy includes a large number of activities, while optional Adventure, Extreme and Ultimate packs extend that list considerably. For trekking, standard cover reaches 3,000 metres, the Adventure Pack reaches 4,600 metres and the Extreme Pack can cover trekking above 4,600 metres.

Another major advantage is that you can buy a policy after your trip has already started. It has always been particularly interesting for backpackers because of its long maximum trip durations.

The Backpacker product can cover trips of up to 15 months and can usually be extended to a maximum of 18 months. Its biggest advantage is flexibility: you can buy a policy while already abroad and, subject to the policy conditions, extend an existing Single Trip policy while travelling.

For eligible European policies, buying while already travelling generally comes with a 72-hour waiting period before full cover applies. Single Trip cover can usually be extended up to the maximum policy duration allowed by your country-specific wording.

World Nomads is also strong for trekking. European policies can cover hiking up to 6,000 metres if you select the appropriate activity level when buying the policy. It does not cover private healthcare, repatriation, lost or stolen belongings, and certain rescue costs. Depending on the type of trip, I may therefore still buy a Europe-only policy for those additional risks. You can read the official EU explanation here.

How much does travel insurance cost?

There is no useful universal figure. Price depends on your age, country of residence, destination, whether the United States is included, trip duration, medical limits, deductible and optional activities. Longer policies often have a lower average daily cost than very short policies, but the only sensible way to compare prices is to run the same trip through several quote forms.

When should I buy travel insurance?

If your policy includes trip-cancellation cover, buy it soon after booking the trip so that the cancellation benefit starts as early as possible. If you only care about medical cover, you may be able to buy closer to departure, but I would still avoid leaving it until the last minute. Policies purchased after departure often have waiting periods.

Does the insurance pay the hospital directly?

It depends on the insurer and the situation. For expensive hospital treatment or emergencies, the assistance company can often arrange direct payment with the hospital. Smaller outpatient expenses may have to be paid by you first and claimed later. If the situation is serious, contact the insurer as soon as possible rather than arranging expensive treatment yourself unless it is an immediate emergency.

What is an annual or multi-trip policy?

An annual multi-trip policy covers multiple trips during a 12-month period. The important detail is that each individual trip normally has a maximum length. For example, Heymondo currently limits each trip under its annual product to 60 consecutive days. If you plan to travel continuously for months, a long-stay or backpacker policy is normally more appropriate.

Can I buy travel insurance after I have already left?

Yes, several of the companies in this guide allow it. True Traveller, World Nomads, SafetyWing, Genki and Globelink currently offer ways to start cover while already abroad, subject to their eligibility rules and waiting periods.

With Heymondo Long Stay, the product is designed for trips longer than 90 days and can be renewed while travelling. If you have already left home and want to start a brand-new Heymondo policy, check the eligibility shown during the quote process before relying on it.

Can I extend travel insurance while travelling?

Often, yes, but the method differs by company. World Nomads and Globelink allow eligible policies to be extended; True Traveller offers already-travelling options; SafetyWing and Genki are structured around flexible longer-term cover; and Heymondo Long Stay can be renewed through the website or app. Always extend before your current cover expires whenever possible.

What if I have a one-way ticket or no fixed return date?

This is where standard holiday insurance can become awkward. True Traveller explicitly sells one-way cover. SafetyWing and Genki are built around travellers and nomads who may not have a conventional return date, while Heymondo Long Stay is designed for trips over 90 days where the return date may change.

Globelink also allows one-way journeys, but its policy conditions specify when cover ends after reaching your final destination. Read the wording carefully if you are emigrating or planning to remain indefinitely in one country, because that may require international health insurance rather than travel insurance.

How do I make a claim without creating unnecessary problems?

When you buy a policy, download the policy wording, certificate and emergency contact details and save them somewhere you can access offline or from the cloud.

If something happens, contact the insurer as soon as reasonably possible. Keep every receipt, medical report, police report, booking confirmation and piece of correspondence. Photograph paper documents and keep digital copies of your flights and accommodation bookings until the trip is completely over.

I learned this the hard way. I used to delete booking confirmations as I travelled, and when I later needed to claim expenses I had to waste time asking airlines for old documents to reconstruct my movements.

If the situation becomes complicated, keep a simple timeline with dates, times, names, phone calls and emails. The easier it is to document exactly what happened, the easier it normally is to deal with the claim.

What is a deductible?

The deductible, also called an excess, is the amount you must absorb yourself before the insurance reimburses the rest of an eligible claim. If your medical deductible is €50 and an eligible doctor visit costs €40, you receive nothing. If it costs €80, the insurer would reimburse €30, assuming the claim is otherwise covered.

This is why a policy that looks cheaper at first glance is not automatically the better deal.
